Winter wedding dress 2017

You may only get married once, but Bridal Fashion Week happens twice a year, meaning innovative ideas—and new takes on old ideas—are forever renewing. Of course, we love the classics, but we're always searching for fresh silhouettes, colors, and details that make us do a double-take. From lingerie-inspired elements to capes and capelets, here's what new wedding dress styles we noticed at Spring 2017 Bridal Fashion Week.

Three-dimensional details have the ability to transform a wedding dress into a work of art. This spring especially, we saw an explosion of texture by way of beading, appliqués, feathers, and more that seemed to reach right off the runways and into our hearts. Next stop: your closet!

    Capes and Capelets

Brides, bow down to the most regal of wedding accessories since the tiara: The cape and the capelet. Just in time for the generation that made "Yas, Queen" more than a statement but a state of mind, the Victorian piece is back and better than ever. This season's lovely caped creations offer coverage like a coat or stole and cascade down the back like a veil.

    Separates

It's official: Separates are here to stay. Whether sets of skirts and crop tops or pants and blouses, the nontraditional wedding look is a surefire way to stand out on the big day. This season's sets are super fun and flirty yet still refined and elegant enough for a bride.

    Lingerie-Inspired

Simultaneously sultry and sweet, lingerie elements have broken out of the boudoir and into bridal. And this season, designers welcomed them more warmly than ever. Think corset bodices, slinky slip dresses, oh-so-sheer fabrics, plunging necklines, and dangerously high slits à la Angelina Jolie.

    (Off the) Shoulder Details

Go and brush your shoulder off. It's your day, after all. Necklines were off the shoulder and all over the runway this season. The modest-meets-sexy, collarbone-bearing bridal look calls to mind style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, while all at once being decidedly modern. We saw updates on the trend, including embroidered illusion necklines, capes with 3-D detailing, and sleeves with peekaboo slits.

    Pink and Blue

Sometimes, a color palette emerges as the next hot trend in wedding dresses. Last season stole its scheme from nature: pink and green. This season, slightly cooler shades made a splash in the sea of white and ivory wedding dresses. Pink, with its romantic, feminine affiliation, extended its stay, with gowns ranging from baby pink to hot pink and everywhere in between. But blues, and a watercolor-esque combination of pinks and blues, were the true new trend—and a convenient one at that for brides in search of "something blue."

    Pants and Jumpsuits

Is there anything cooler (or more comfortable) than wearing a chic, tailored suit for your wedding? We think not. Designers are expanding their wedding dress collections to include pants and jumpsuits—and we couldn't be more thrilled about it. This season's daring suits pair professional minimalism with playful, surprising details such as ruffles and sequins.

    Fringe and Feathers

We love a bit of whimsy in a wedding dress. Soft feathers and fringe as bridal embellishments look light as air and give gowns a glamorous quality reminiscent of Art Deco days gone by. These fringed and feathered styles seem to float out of the heavens and onto the runway—or aisle.

    Head-to-Toe Lace

Lace is a mainstay of bridal for a reason: The fabric is feminine and elegant and can come across as both conservative and va-va-voom. But when used for the length of the dress, the effects are amplified, bringing the bride to a whole other level of grandness. We loved how these looks made lace, with all its vintage connotations, feel fresh this season.
